Free images of drosophyllum lusitanicum, dewy pine, drosophyllaceae.
I took these photos in the Parque Natural da Serra de Sao Mamede which is in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Drosophyllum lusitanicum is a rare carnivourous sundew plant but in this region it is not considered endangered.
Although I encountered these in many places within the Parque most of these pictures are from one location where I estimate there were about two hundred plants. A few years later they were all gone but I found a good number of them approximately 20m away trailing for about 50m along the side of a road.
The road had been resurfaced maybe the year before so it is likely the ground had been disturbed. I thought maybe the seeds are widespread waiting for the conditions to be right for them to germinate. On the other hand the first "colony" of about 200 had no sign of disturbance and was on virtually soiless crumbly schist rock.
I first discovered drosophyllum lusitanicum on holiday near Monchique in the Algarve. I was strolling around the holiday home grounds looking at the vegetation on a hillside of mixed cork oak and pine when something cold licked my bare ankle. Later when I discovered that the Portuguese call this plant Pinheiro Baboso or slobbering pine it was obvious why. If it hadn't slobbered me then maybe I would never have know about the dewy pine.
I have found lone specimens in the Serra de Sao Mamede in many places but always in the higher mainly forested regions. Often on the edge of pine where a clearing has been made but also occasionally in places undisturbed.

With my newer camera and a focus stacking technique I have taken some detailed photos of sundew in County Cork Ireland. When I'm sure of the species I'll load them to cjsofy too. I'll returned to the Sao Mamede hills in September 2023 and the Drosophyllum were pretty frazzled and not photogenic enough to take new shots.
